DESCRIPTION:
APW - Elgin, Convertible model, 21J, Grade 91, three finger bridge mvt, 16S, heavy 14K gold recase with spring-loaded front was presumably originally a HC that has since been modified with cut-out of front lid and insertion of crystal, gold cuvette, correct white glass-enamel DS dial that friction fits to mvt via a canister style ring, SW-LS, fully capped lever escapement, raised gold jewel settings, nickel damascene, s#942002. Gross weight of assembled watch 77.2 dwt (120.2 g). A single run of 1000 serial numbers spanning 942001 to 943000 was blocked for Grade 91 production, but based on known examples we believe the actual production was only approximately 350 made as all examples we have observed have fallen neatly within only the 942001 to 942350 portion of this run indicating the likelihood that nearly two-thirds of the blocked serial number range were never completed. This particular example is notable for its extremely early placement within the production run, being just the second Grade 91 made by serial number. Selections from the collection of Tom McIntyre. CONDITION:
Mvt: Running, fine-plus cosmetic mvt condition overall, scratch to right side of barrel bridge, chattered scratch above serial number, few scattered very small dark spots to plate surfaces; dial with small chips around center hole, outer chapter hls at 3:30 and 5, small hl above seconds-register, some perimeter rub under bezel along left side; excellent hands; case shows medium wear, profuse patch of fine to micro-fine scratches to center rear, two mild dings to band at 3, bow impressions to upper rear shoulder, hinges missing one end-cap and with two brass end-caps; tight bow thinned at top; crown shows ample wear.
